“Life will never be the same, ever. It’s a piece of your heart that’s ripped out. It will never come back.”
This man speaks to the death of his daughter. She died of a heroin overdose and he was the one who found her body. Sad, right? No parent should out live a child, and especially not because of a drug overdose at age 23.
Unfortunately this man is not alone.
Parents all over are living this nightmare because heroin use is a growing problem for the suburbs.
Why is such a dangerously powerful and addicting drug so popular? Why don’t young people understand the risk they are taking for a cheap and temporary high?
Experimentation with prescription pills that teens find in their parents’ medicine cabinets, or that they are offered at a party, spark the addiction to painkillers, or opiates. When a kid can no longer find pills like OxyContin, Vicodin, or Norco, he or she turns to heroin. It is cheaper and easier to find, and can provide an even better rush and euphoric high.
Philadelphia, where this dad lives, and Chicago, are having the biggest issue with the growing problem of heroin use in its suburbs. What was once thought of as an inner city problem, mainly among the homeless population, is now mainstream and affecting people who have worked hard to provide a safe life for their children.
What can be done?
Education and awareness! If you think your son or daughter may be using drugs, find out more about the symptoms of addiction and ways you can check for signs in your child.
The father who lost his daughter is working to spread the word of heroin’s danger. You think your kid wouldn’t be capable of even trying heroin? So did he.
Be honest with yourself and find out what is really going on.
