Party drugs are a whole group of illegal substances that are used to create a dissociative high. They can enhance social experiences and lower inhibitions, which is what makes them so popular for party goers. Party drugs are mostly used by teenagers and young adults, and carry serious and even life threatening side effects. It’s important for parents to recognize the various names and effects of party drugs, and for users of these drugs to be aware of the risks as well.

Ecstasy- Also known as Molly, MDMA, love doves and E. Ecstasy is one of the most popular party drugs, especially in places where alcohol is not allowed. Like many other party drugs, it’s manufactured into small pills in a lab, and will often bear the manufacturer’s signature stamp. The colorful pills seem inviting, but provide a dangerous high.

Roofies- The pharmaceutical name for this drug is Rohypnol and while it’s illegal in the U.S. and Canada, it’s available as a prescription sedative in many other countries. Roofies are the most popular date rape drug, because it’s easy to slip into a person’s drink in a crowded place.

Ketamine- In the same family as PCP, Ketamine is also known as Special K and baby food. It is used as a date rape drug in some cases and is used in veterinary practices as a sedative. It can come in the form of pills, powder, crystals, or a solution.

GHB- Also known as liquid ecstasy, GHB (Grievous Bodily Harm) is actually a sedative that can send the heart rate plummeting. It is difficult to measure doses of and is easy to overdose on.

Meth- Because methamphetamine is so prevalent in many parts of the country, it’s easy for teenagers and young adults to get and to use at parties. Meth is also called crystal, speed, crank, or glass, and is highly addictive.

Most party drugs are stimulants, giving users a burst of energy. They create a feeling of social closeness, which is why they’re so popular in group settings. There are many dangerous side effects associated with these drugs though, including:

  • Severe dehydration
  • Increased blood pressure and heart rate
  • Nausea
  • Confusion and loss of coordination
  • Memory impairment
  • Hallucinations, paranoia and panic
  • Seizures
  • Heart Failure
  • Death

Serious injury and death are real risks with these types of drugs and some of them are highly addictive. Even though party drugs often appear to be harmless, they’re very dangerous substances.
